This is a one person effort on very first gaming project. I enjoyed developing the game and hope you will enjoy playing it. The backgrounds have a pleasing hand-drawn feel to them. Birds and jets flying in the background is a nice touch, too.
Controls and gameplay was straightforward and easy to pick up.
Good variety of enemies. I like how they move and how the player ship has banking animations.
Great difficulty progression!
UI bar at the top was informative and easy to understand.
Suggested improvements:
I feel like the Samurai theme is lacking. The shuriken attack gives one more of an impression of cracked glass than throwing stars. And technically, one would associate shuriken more with ninjas than samurai.
Towards the very beginning of the level, there is a lot of "dead time" where there is nothing going on while the player waits for the next enemy to appear.
After picking up the 3-shot spread power-up, additional power-ups didn't seem to do anything. Maybe that was just the end of the upgrade path?
Overall:
As a one-person developer also making a shoot'em up game I can say that yours was fun to play and has a lot of nice features! I got to the ending boss of level 1 and wore it down to its last 80 HP before dying. My score was 9050. Good job!
